Sketchstitch v Coramantic

Well its been a bit longer than a week since my last blog post - I did finish the painting I showed you though and a few more similar ones. I've decided to list my newest work in etsy and folksy. I think I will explore this style of artwork further and play around with subject matter, I'll keep you updated on this work through this blog. However, by no means am I saying I've found my style- and just to complicate things even more I've started up a new blog and etsy shop called Coramantic (my middle name is Cora and it sounds a bit romantic and frantic).

Coramantic is a bit like Sketchstitch' ugly sister, this will be my home to explore ugly cute work. Most of the work you will see at the moment has been done in gouache and ink. If you like this work I'd love for you to come and join me at my blog, shop or facebook. Its another branch for me to explore and its very early days yet.

I have noticed that my work seems to swing through different moods so its suited me to split things up like this- well I think it has, we'll see how things go. Just out of interest I'd love if you left a comment to let me know what you think of the two styles and if you have a preference, it really helps me to get some feedback x

Its all in the eyes

Since my last post I have been busy experimenting further with acrylic paint. I'm starting to develop a growing collection of unfinished pieces while I practice with subjects and technique. Below is one of the first paintings I tried, I've been in the habit of working from imagination without much sense of direction or control and I'm still undecided if this is a good method or not- I'm leaning towards no, in the ongoing search for 'my style'.

I had in my mind I would like to do something a bit prettier so here is a snippet from the next stage. I painted some little ladies out who were quite similar in features to the cats I had painted previously (I have lots of artwork linking from one stage to the next but I'm hoping just to show you some of the key stages).

When I finished the painting I sat it in my living room for a few days, kept looking at it to decide what I did and didn't like about it- in the end I decided I liked the spontaneity of the brush marks but felt that she was lacking in expression. Here's where we swing to the next extreme. I though why don't I try painting a lady but with much bigger eyes, full of expression- well to be honest she just looks startled but have a look at the picture below to see what I was playing around with (none of these paintings are finished but you get an idea of where I was going with them).

I stopped painting for a few days and went back to working in my sketchbook, playing around with ideas and in particular expressions. Its amazing how changing the size of some eyes or the distance apart they are can change the whole look of a face. Below is a photo from my sketchbook of a girl I drew that I finally thought- I like the shape of her face, the size of her eyes etc (my hubby said he liked the one on the right hand side better- I told him to go away).

I drew the girl out on to canvas and have just started to paint her in. Below is the painting in its first stage and I think I am still happy with her features but we'll see how it goes. I will hopefully complete this one (if I don't go of it- I am, terrible, TERRIBLE, for this- liking something one minute and hating it the next. I'll go to bed thinking that's working and come down the next morning and think what on earth!). The latest drawings I've been doing are not too dissimilar to what I was working on a couple of years ago with florabob and thornbob.

I know how important it is to take some time out at the moment and experiment with my style until I find a place I am happy with. I want people to be able to look at my work and think oh that's a such and such (yes, I'll come up with a new name at some point too). I wont be listing anything on folksy or etsy for the time being until I sort out where I am going. I'll probably post back in a week or so, so we'll see if I've completed this painting or moved off in yet another new direction. It was reassuring from my last post that I'm not the only one to go through this phase, I just hope thats all it is.

Moving on

The last week or so I've been busy with some new paintings. I've been exploring combining elements of different work I have done in the past. I've tended to swing from high to low before through extremes of creepy or cute- I think I am starting to reach a balance between the two that is true to my own personal style.

In the past I've always tended to work in gouache for more lighthearted work and oil paint for the darker stuff, until now I had never tried acrylic. I feel I can get the controlled/expressive balance a lot easier using the acrylic, I cant believe I've never tried it before. I'm going to spend the next few weeks just getting comfortable with the paint and exploring the new images and characters I've started to create. In the photo below most of the paintings are still a work in progress and are not completed yet but it gives you an idea of what I've been up to.

I'm not sure I'm happy with the name Sketchstitch any more- I have an urge to tidy things up and start afresh. Over the last year since I started my blog I have been exploring so many different areas from sewing creatures to illustration and fine art. Dabbling here and there really but I've gone back to pretty much where I left off when I graduated nearly ten years ago. I studied textile design and by far my favourite subject throughout the four years was visual studies- exploring mark making, materials, creativity and imagination. All the other blogs I read everyone seems so focused and clear in their direction, I'd love to know if any of you reading this have experienced this style finding I seem to be going through.

New ACEOs

I thought I would share with you some of the new ACEOs I've been making recently. ACEO stands for art cards editions and originals- they are small peicies of artwork to a size of 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches and can be made in any medium. They are a popular afforable way of collecting small peicies of artwork. I have been experimenting a lot lately with colour and texture and introducing a bit more of a 'textile' feel to my latest work through layering and collage.

I have painted these ACEOs using gouache and added texture by combining text from a vintage book with segments of torn hand painted papers. I have thought about adding some stitched areas to them and its something I'll explore in the near future.

I listed the above ACEO on Folksy this moring and it sold rather quickly. I've painted a few in quite romantic colours as I thought they would make a nice little gift to pop into a valentines card, I'll try to list one or two everyday in my shop.

New year resolutions

Happy new year everyone. As this is my first post of the new year I thought I'd share a few of my plans for the coming months. The run up to Christmas was quite quiet for me in terms of creating new work for Sketchstitch and I took a bit of time out to try and clear my head and give myself direction.

I have often blogged about the conflict I have between creating work that reflects my own personal style but is also commercial. One thing I have decided is to concentrate on drawing rather than sewing. I'd love to put a little website together that shows the work I've had featured- from exhibitions to zines. Its maybe being a little ambitious at this stage but I think if I can start to group my work together as a collection it will give a true feeling of my style and let people see what I'm involved in. Anyone with any advise on putting together your own website I'd love to hear it. I've seen many sites that you can build one with but really I'm not sure who to go with.

I've set up a little room in the house now with all my materials where I can disappear off to when I'm creating. I plan to submit more work throughout 2011- when I'm working to a brief it keeps me focused and I'm aiming to restock my Folksy shop too, mainly with little original drawings and paintings and maybe a few prints. My last few sales have been ACEOs so I'll make a few more of those too. I think there will be more giveaways this year as well- keep your eyes peeled here and facebook.

So there we have it, lots of plans for the coming months. Lets see if I can stick to them and try not to wander off track. I'll make sure to be a better blogger- that's the biggest resolution.

I've been a bad blogger this month, with no updates at all. I have been doing a bit of painting but not as much as usual and a couple of gifts I'm working on for Christmas have been taking up a fair bit of my time. November is probably the month I should have been my busiest- getting work done and topping up my folksy shop, never mind- I will hopefully have a few new items to list very soon. Still having the same old problem of painting/making what I want and painting/making what other people might want to buy! I have had a couple of sales this week through Folksy which has been good, especially with the lack of promoting I've been doing.

I wont have any excuse this week for no blogging or creating if the weather keeps up with the way its been going. Ventured out in the car today but only for about half an hour to pop into Tempt. Spent a good bit of yesterday out in the garden building a snow bear-catman with my son. All this snow is getting me in the mood for Christmas awfully early this year and I've got a feeling the tree will be going up very soon.

Village of the Damned

Village of the Damned is the first horror film festival to be held in Auchmithie north of Arbroath. Its taking place this coming weekend and involves horror films being screened over the three nights of Halloween. As well as the films there will be an exhibition taking place which will be open during the day (12pm - 5pm) from Friday 29th - Sunday 31st October. The exhibition is free but for tickets for the film screenings you can buy them here. The event has been organised by Helen Macdonald from Jolly Good a jewellery and accessory designer with a love of all things horror and Ross Bull from Agitator Studios who is a filmmaker and photographer.

I have six oil paintings which will be part of the exhibition with a creepy theme. I'll make sure I pop along to have a look at all the work exhibited but I'll be giving film screenings a miss as I'm a wimp when it comes to horror movies and hardly ever watch movies for over 18s- I'd much rather a thriller, rom com or a cartoon I'm afraid.

I have been looking through the Papergirl Manchester photos online- hoping to catch a glimpse of the drawings I submitted, well, I've not seen the drawings but I found the envelope I posted them in!

Papergirl is coming to Glasgow next, a bit closer to home this one.

Papergirl Manchester

Papergirl is an art project from Berlin which involves handing out rolled up artworks from bicycles to random passers by on the street. The project is making its debut in the UK in Manchester this October.

Papergirl Manchester has an exhibition which will run from the 1st October - 21st October, this is a chance to see the work before it is distributed. There are no guidelines to the format of work submitted to the project so originals, prints, photos and photocopies all come together. A mix of work will go into each roll for delivery.I submitted six original drawings for the project- all pencil with gouache and ink. I just wish I wish a bit closer to Manchester so I could have visited the exhibition- or made a point of hanging around the streets on the day of delivery!

SuperDoodle

Its a collaborative project between SuperFly and ‘Tartan Baffies' (aka John Paterson) - all you need to do is print out the dingbats and doodle, or open in photoshop and digitally doodle if you prefer. The best doodles will be reproduced on a set of 1 inch badges which will be made available through the SuperFly site.

Dundee to Edinburgh

Earlier on in the week I popped through to Edinburgh to The Spider and The Fly (65 Bread Street). The Spider and The Fly is brought to you by Magpie- a venture to bring art, craft and design talent together. I was really pleased to have my work accepted to go on sale here- its a gorgeous shop stocking a great range including prints, artwork, handmade jewellery, gifts, clothing and accessories. There are also a variety of events taking place here- the next being an exhibition of drawing and sculpture held by Nikki McWilliams - a tribute to the humble teacake on the 7th of September.

The images below show some of the goodies available for sale in The Spider and The Fly.

A little reminder too, that its less than a week to go until n_ilk at the botanics and Dundee Jamboree. It takes place in the Botanic Gardens in Dundee on Saturday the 11th of September, 3.30- 10.30. Tickets are priced £6.

Also for anyone who doesn't know yet, I've set up a little group on facebook for artists and makers in the Fife/Tayside area (and anyone else who's interested) to share events and exhibitions that are going on.

I thought I'd set up the group after a conversation with Lora from Little Badger at last weekends Tea on the Lawn, which was a great event- (I'm good at telling you about events coming up but not always so good at letting you know how they went) I met loads of lovely people and sold some new work. Anyway, back to the conversation- Lora asked how I found out about the event and other events going on in the area- I realised its all pretty much word of mouth (I have Mary-Jane from Kitschnbake to thank for finding out about Tea on the Lawn). I thought it would be good to have a group on facebook where we could post events that are coming up and share whats going on. So far I'm the only one to have posted but I'm hoping it will take off- there are a few members now. If you do join please pop into the discussions section, say hello and leave some links so we can all find each other.

Things we learned as girls

Just a little blog post to highlight an exhibition that is on at the moment in Cupar- 'Things we learned as girls'. This exhibition explores the links between childhood experience and artists work in adulthood. It is curated by Gayle Nelson, a Cupar based visual artist. It is taking place at 15 Millgate, Cupar (an empty victorian school) and runs until the 28th of August. Look out for the rag book by Fiona McDonald- stitched words against delicate little drawings, very beautiful.

Craft events galore!

Over the next couple of months I have three craft events coming up so thought I'd post to let you know about when and where.

On the 28th of August I am taking part in 'Tea on the lawn' this event is taking place in Springfield House, Stratheden Hospital in Cupar. The aim of this event is to raise funds for the new Adamson Hospital Community Café Extension. There will be lots of crafts on sale as well as stalls, prizes and tasty food. Some of the artists and makers that will be there on the day include Aileen Clarke, Nikki McWilliams and Sparklehen. The scrumptious Kitschnbake is donating a box of tasty Kitschnbake cakes to be won in the raffle (I have experienced myself just how good these cakes are!).

The following month on Saturday the 11th of September I will be at Dundee Jamboree and n_ilk at the Botanics. N_ilk who run mixed genre music nights in Dundee have a annual micro festival and this year invited Dundee Jamboree to join them for one night. Dundee Jamboree is a collaborative project by Jen Collins, Nikki McWilliams and Lauren Gentry which organises events encouraging the creative community of Dundee to come together for collaboration and the chance to sell their wares.

This event could be indoors or outdoors dependent on the weather and will run from approximately 3pm - 10pm. I have seen the photos from the previous event held by Dundee Jamboree in Drouthys Basement and there looked to be so much amazing work on offer that I am really excited to be part of this.

The third event I am taking part in is being held on the 2nd of October in Steeple Church Hall, Dundee. This is an indoor craft market which will be raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign Tayside and Fife. Some other sellers who will be at this event include Kitschnbake and Artspace Scotland.

This might be the last blog post for a while as I had better get a move on and get sketching and stitching!

Finding my style

I have been working on lots of new artwork lately and concentrating on creating rather than selling- but now I could use a little help. Today on Folksy I listed a painting in a vintage frame of the little garden bumble I drew. I feel that my Folksy shop looks a bit 'bitty' and I would like to have more of a consistency to it. I could do with some feedback on the work I have been doing lately before I charge down the route I have in mind. Would you consider buying original artwork? are you happy with a print? do you like the mix of original art with vintage frames? any feedback would be most appreciated.

I had to share with you the gorgeous artwork I received in the post today from Jamie Mills. I sent Jamie a couple of drawings last week and when he asked if there was anything he could draw for me the first thing that popped into my head was a sausage dog (I really like sausage dogs). This sausage dog is so looooong- hes wonderful!

It's lovely knowing your getting something but not quite how its going to look or what its going to be exactly. Although I had a feeling I'd like it as I was a bit of a fan of Jamies when I first saw his work- have a look at some more on flickr.

MoonMade Pop Up Shop

MoonMade is a pop up shop which is appearing around Dundee from June to October. It is located within the Hannah Maclure Centre at the moment but its location will vary over the coming months- sometimes taking over a vacant shop for as little as a weekend.

MoonMade supports and promotes local artists and makers by selling their goods while at the same time raising money and awareness of the charity Youth- Link Dundee. Youth-Link Dundee work with children who are at risk of becoming socially isolated, ages ranging from 5 - 18. Children are supported through group work or through one to one befriending. I have been a befriender myself since March this year- not with Youth-Link but with Families First in St Andrews so know a bit about this role and how important it is. I love the idea behind MoonMade in that its supporting a great cause as well as local crafts people- even the owners of the empty shops benefit by having their property showcased- so if you're in Dundee pop in!

You can see some of the artwork I have for sale in the second photo- the two framed pictures on the third shelf. Emily Moir has also put six of my smaller artworks on the wall which was lovely to see- click on Emily to see her work and find out more.

Mail Art Exhibition

Today I ventured into Edinburgh city centre, I think the first time I've been there since I moved to St Andrews. It was pretty hectic but that was to be expected with the festival on. Had a little nose round some of the shops and paid Urban Outfitters in Princes Street a visit for the first time since it opened. I also took a trip up to Bread Street and popped into The Spider and the Fly in the Magpie market for a peek at the Cut-Click mail art exhibition. My work was there and I had wanted to see all the mail art together after spotting a few pictures going around twitter- it really looked great, very impressive (the shop was full of lots of goodies too). ...Booties By Dannie- congratulations!! I don't think I've ever drawn a dinosaur before and I can just imagine him stomping around the cars- I hope Mr Zilla likes what I come up with. That was the most difficult giveaway ever to decide though! Thank you all for your entries and taking the time to comment on my work. I think because I wanted to choose which idea I worked with it made it really difficult for me- I kept reading the comments and thinking ooh I could do this or that for this one and so on- round in circles. I feel like I'm getting to know lots of you too and there were quite a few of the ideas I would really have liked to have gone for but knew I had to stick to one. So I just went with my gut feeling at the end of the night. I think I will do something like this again though so please have a shot next time too.

Toe Fluff Show

A few weeks ago I submitted a toe fluff character for Steve Racks toe fluff project and I was excited to be confirmed this morning as one of the artists exhibiting in The Toe Fluff Show in the Post Modern Gallery in Swindon from 27th July- 11th August.

There is a flickr group showing all the toe fluffs that have been submitted. it includes the sketch a toe fluff which you can have a shot at yourself.

Doodle Schmoodle

Today is the first day of the Doddle Schmoodle. The Doddle Schmoodle is a doodle a day for a month on a given template from Bettys Place. The idea is you print the template off, doodle on it with the days theme then scan it or photograph it and post it to the Doodle Schmoodle flickr group. The tile for today was 'Me, me, me' a little introduction to begin with... looking forward to seeing what tomorrows doodle theme is. Its great looking at all the doodles in the flickr group and how everyones contributions are so varied from each others.

I took part in something similar to this last month called the scribble project- but it was only one sheet with a variety of themes. This time I'm going to create a little journal with all my individual pages.

Tree Map Exhibition- Outbye Gallery

Yesterday afternoon I went along to the opening of the 'Tree Map Exhibition' in the Outbye Gallery in Ovenstone by Pitenweem. The theme of the exhibition was based on artists favourite tree in Scotland. I chose the tree at the back of my Grandmas back garden because I grew up here and used to play round the tree and make up little stories. The exhibition runs from July 17th until July 31st. Some of the artists in the exhibition include Penelope Anstice, Allan Beveridge, Susie Goodwin, Eleanor Hynd, Ewan Hynd, Rufus McKidd, Judith Rowan, Elizabeth Shepherd, Katy Stevenson, Thea Stevenson, Daniel Tyminski and Ruth Walker.

Guerrilla Gallery

On Friday night I went along to the Guerrilla Gallery launch at the Hannah Maclure Centre in Dundee. Silly me forgot to take my camera and there were loads of amazing photo opportunities. Live drawing was going on on two projector screens, skype performance from New York by Edward Shallow, live digital drawing, VJing and loads more. I had a shot at the live drawing myself, great fun. There will be more events like this over the coming months so lesson learned- next time take the camera!

Busy, busy!

Ive been a bit of a bad blogger lately and have not updated for a while- but for good reasons. Ive been submitting work to a few online projects and also have been working on a piece for exhibition next month. I must admit I find it easier to complete work when I can send the image off online- I need to go into the gallery when I have completed this painting. I think I'm scared its not suitable or what they were after, will it fit in with the other work? Its good having the computer as a middle man sometimes.

On Friday I'm going along to the Hannah Maclure Centre for the Guerrilla Gallery launch. This is an networking event- the point of the event is to showcase who is doing what in Dundee (and surrounding) in a professional but relaxed manner. Work will not be for sale but exposure of work could lead to future opportunities for sales, exhibition and collaboration. I have submitted five images to be shown, they will be projected onto a screen as a slide show along with the other artists/designers work, looking forward to it (and beer and music too!).

Last night I went along to the Yuck n Yum summer launch night. Yuck n Yum is a Scottish art zine based in Dundee keen to promote young Scottish artists. It was held in the Hannah Maclure centre in Dundee and this was the first time I had ever been, I had my drawing accepted in the zine and was keen to have a look (they also had some pretty tasty pies on sticks and I enjoyed a peanut and chocolate one!).

The other artists featured in this issue are Jonathan Baxter, Connor Clark, Sean Duffield, Sanna Dyker, Ross Hamilton Frew, Ryan Hays, Emma McIntyre, Norrie Millar, Selena Mowat, Twelfth of Never, Janie Nicoll, Simon Reekie, The Unknown Artist, Edible Wearable and Anthony Zinonos.

Gouache, sketch and collage

A week or so ago I showed the first in a series of three paintings I have been working on, here is the second painting, I'm pretty sure its finished. Again this painting is to do with balance in the body and feelings about this balance being disrupted- think the reproductive system. I'm not going to describe every bit of the painting and what things mean, its my outlet for expressing myself without needing to do that. This is painted in gouache with collage so its perhaps not as expressive as if I had worked with oil, maybe more of an illustration.

The third painting in the set is not going well, it could take some time to finish, I just do a little and put it away (have done for all of them). I scribbled over part of it in pen too so now I have this to sort out.

I bought a new sketch book yesterday and think I'll do a few sketches here to lead up to creating a new painting/paintings.

Ive been really enjoying painting and drawing lately, Ive not been using the sewing machine much at all. I do jump about a fair bit. I think my folksy shop has been looking a bit jumbled lately as it reflects what I'm working on. Some people are so clear in their 'brand' and seem to know exactly where they are going- I hope I'll get there, but it might take some time. I'm trying not to think too much about selling and more about what I'm enjoying at the minute. I've started to send a couple of images of artwork to a zine or two so we'll see how that goes. I'm happy to be busy creating.

Custom Made Cards

Lately Ive had some requests for custom made cards that are inspired by some of the little ladies I love to draw and paint. I thought I would put it out there that if anyone would like one made please email me. They are A5 in size with colour co-ordinating envelope in a cello bag.

All I need to know is hair style and colour, eye colour and any theme or colour way you might have in mind (oh and a message if you want one). For example- Sarah is going to be 10 on her birthday, she has blonde curly hair and blue eyes, she likes pink and shoes and dresses. I will make the card incorporating all the info you have given me and then email you to check its what you had in mind. I charge £4 for the cards and £1 postage.

Capture Cure

Last week I submitted an illustration to Capture Cure and I was pleased to find out they have put it on to the Capture Cure facebook page for voting. This means that if my artwork is in the top 36 for the most votes it goes into the Showcase Exhibition in Brick Lane and is auctioned off to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer on the 1st September.

Its quite strange timing for my submission to be accepted because I heard my artwork would go on to the site on Friday afternoon. On Friday morning I was told by my oncologist I would no longer need to keep going to the hospital for check ups. You see in September 2008, when I was 28, I was diagnosed with Her 2+ breast cancer and the last couple of years have been filled with treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy) so to find out I don't need to go back was a pretty huge deal for me. I still have a few years hormone therapy left and I will need to go for annual mammograms but really this is nothing in comparison.

For Capture Cure I decided to create a piece that said thank you to everyone. Thanks to my family and friends, to my doctors and nurses for the support I have been given over the last few years. I would love for you to vote for 'Thank you all' on the Capture Cure facebook page, but even if you don't feel you want to 'like' my work perhaps you could 'like' the Capture Cure page or find some of the other artworks you do like. Its for a very good cause.

A little bit of colour

Just a little post to show a couple of collages I put together- elements taken from the sketches in the last post. These are all done in pencil, ink, fabric and gouache.

One of the three...and three more

I thought I would share the first painting from a set of three I started working on a couple of years ago (I know, very slow- been getting them out, doing a little, putting them away and on it goes). This one is complete and I think the second one is 99% done- number three still has a way to go.

I've never kept a diary but I think painting is a sort of outlet for emotions for me. The three paintings in this collection are all to do with balance in the body and what can happen when that balance is upset. This is painted in gouache with collage and pencil.

Ive been doing quite a bit of drawing the last couple of nights and thought you might like to see a couple of the sketches Ive done. They are based around the cuddle cats and zebra pants owls I like to make. I drew Mr Zebra Pants minus his pants first (ooh er) and had him staring inquisitively at a little passing bird. I quite liked the tree I drew beside him which led on to the second drawing.

This time I thought I would draw a few more trees and I put them round a few houses in the woods. These drawings are just pencil on card. I think the next step might be do a few more, say 20, (Ive done about 10 so far) and then start to introduce colour- maybe collage with paper and fabric, some stitched lines and gouache and ink.

The third drawing shows a cat quite like my cuddle cats in the face but I decided to give him legs this time and make him look less like a cuddle and more like a cat. I'll post some more sketches soon and show you how they progress into colour.

Yesterday I wrote about how impressed I was with the degree show at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and mentioned a couple of the departments and artists that were favourites of mine. This is a post to highlight Colin Wilson B.A (Hons) Fine Art, I mentioned him yesterday and his painting 'So on and so Forth' (shown below).

Colins work really caught my eye as soon as I walked in the room. I love the contrast between the black and white imagery against the strong bold colourful backgrounds and writing. More of Colins work can be found at Colin Wilson Art. Definitely worth a look.

Dundee Degree Show 2010

Every year I try to make sure I go along to a degree show. Its great to see new, fresh work and it takes me back to the good old days. This year I went to the degree show at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, a change for me I must admit as usually it's Edinburgh College of Art (although I think the Edinburgh show is in June so maybe I'll see that too this year). I only moved to St Andrews last October so Dundee is nice and close to me. Ive only been to the degree show at Heriot Watt once since I graduated- I loved seeing the work but I didn't like bumping into old lecturers and them asking what I was up to. I was a visual merchandising manager at the time, not really what I had hoped for (not awful- but not my 'dream' job) God knows what I'd tell them now. There were some very successful people who came out of my class at uni who are doing very well for themselves (my eyes aren't that green honest, I know they have all worked hard to get to where they are now).

So get back on track- some of the departments I saw today that I was most impressed with were animation (especially a film called 'The Welder' by Stuart Turnbull and Robert Connor), Fine Art (Colin Wilson 'So on and so Forth' was one of my favourites here) and textiles of course. I loved the quirky style of Diane Allan in Textile Design and the beautiful tea cup images she produced through drawing, collage and screen printing. In the illustration department I found lots of yummy prints for sale, so I treated myself. I'm not normally a big rabbit fan but I really liked this one 'Lapin in trees' by Barbara Beek.

Heart's not in it

Here are a couple of sketches that led to the final painting below. I cut the doodles in the first picture out from a notebook I used to use at work. I placed them altogether in an image that resembles a heart. The final heart is gouache and pencil.

I thought I would share with you some of the work I have created over the last few years that I have had hidden away. Almost all of it has never been seen by anyone before and its not really in my usual chirpy sketchstitch style.

I'm just trying to find my way at the moment but I think its going to take a while. This will be the darkest stuff you ever see from me (I hope) but I am working on a body of work at the moment that has some similar creatures to the ones found in some of these paintings- but with a lighter feel.

These paintings were done in oil and its amazing how your style can change so much with different paint- I usually use gouache for a more controlled approach. I start slapping it all over the place when I work in oil. I'm going to start uploading a lot more of the work I do for myself from now on (instead of shoving it under the bed).

I think so far Ive only really shown cushions Ive been working on or artwork relating to whats for sale on folksy. These paintings are much more personal to me.

Summer Fayre prep

Last week I was away in Whinfell forest so I never got much creative work done (well I did some willow weaving in centre parcs which was fun, but you know what I mean). This week I have started to get together items for the summer fayre on Saturday- mainly the 'sketch' side of things- cards, prints, original artwork and aceos. I will look at the 'stitch' side later on in the week but I have owls, cuddle cats and hanging hearts ready to sort through.

This is my twirly card stand getting filled up and ready to go, just need to make a price sign for the top.

I got my second sale on Folksy today which was exciting (though it was to a close friend)- I know that Zebra Pants Owl is away to a good home. I am also thinking about doing my first giveaway/competition soon, I'll come back to the idea after Saturday is over.

Big Blog Card Swap

A couple of weeks ago I signed up to take part in the Big Blog Card Swap. The idea behind the swap is that a group of people take part by making a card each and sending it to another member of the swap. This swap was organised by Sarah at Wrapped up with string and Naomi at Leaves in the spring. All I had to do was email through my name and address and Naomi and Sarah sorted out the cycle of who was sending where. I only posted my card yesterday but I wanted to show you the one I received in the post.

This card is gorgeous and made up of lots of little folds of patterned paper with a ribbon and pearl detail. New work for summer fayre

A couple of weeks ago I showed a photo of some of the cuddle cats I had been making and that the plan was to put them on folksy. I found out recently, however, that my village is holding a summer fayre next month and that they are looking for stall holders, so I have decided not to list anything new online for the time being and everything I have made I will take to the fayre.

I have been working on some new gouache paintings that I think I will try and sell as small prints. I'll just need to see how it goes- I have done craft fairs in the past and there has been times when they have gone well and times when they were not so good- I generally only sold cards before and I think even when you sold a lot it was difficult to make much as a profit (table fees, materials, time, petrol....). The good thing about this local fayre is that the table is about a quarter of the price you would pay at a craft fair, so I don't have much to loose. It will also be good to get some feedback and see what people are interested in most.

When I have the fayre over with I will definitely concentrate on getting my folksy shop looking better. I know that it needs a lot of work done in terms of listing and photography. I am waiting on some business cards arriving so I will put them out at the fayre- try and start promoting myself a bit more.

Cuddle Cats

I have finished some of the cuddle cats I have been working on and thought I would post a few pics before I list them on folksy. Ive kept with the light pastel colours I have been using in some of the other things I have made recently but I think I might try the next one in black with contrasting colours- maybe white or animal prints.

The one below is a bit different to the others. I used a dark denim and spotty fabric for the lower half and back. The red collar is made from suede and the tail felt. I will try a few more in this style too. He is sitting next to a cushion made from the same fabric.

Blonde, brunette and redhead

I'm having a bit of a frustrating time working on this blog at the moment. You will see it changing about lots while I try and sort out a new header and get a better page layout. I cant decide between a header which is busy or fairly plain? Also If anyone knows how to put pictures on please let me know-I want to create a gallery down the side and it wont accept any urls I paste, grr!

Anyhow, back to the title, I thought I would show a pic of the designs I have been working on for some new cushions. Ive done three variations each with a slightly different theme and hair colour. I think they would look cute in a little girls bedroom. They have been painted out in gouache and the final design will be done in machine embroidery (hopefully).

I am also working on more cuddle cushions at the moment and I have just made my first cat. I have a few more ready to sew, so when I have them made I will post the pics on here.

Heart Cushion- machine embroidery

Last month I showed a design for a cushion I had been working on, a large pink heart with red felt wings and a happy face (kind of like a giant cushion cuddle!). I used dylon and hand stitching for the face on the original with a button for detail. I now have the two colourways I designed in the next stage back from the company they are for, machine embroidered- here are some close ups. Let me know which one you prefer, I have a clear favourite but it would be interesting to see if everyone feels the same.

I think for the backing on these I will have red gingham on the white version with bright red felt wings. For the pink version I will have a pale pink with a tiny floral pattern for the backing, again with bright red felt wings.

On Folksy, yipppeee!

I have just opened my little Sketchstitch shop on Folksy and I'm quite excited about it. Ive just been putting on a selection of the things Ive been making like the cushion cuddles, cards and framed textile art. I have listed 12 things now and I will just make sure I keep listing regularly and try and build up quite a big shop. Of course now I have the problem of people finding the shop and then of course do they like what I sell? (we'll see if I'm quite so chirpy a month from now). I have been thinking about my blog and how it might be helpful a year or so from now to new Folksy sellers. It will be interesting to see how things develop over the months- how easy will it be to get that first sale?, how long will it take?, how will I promote myself? and probably most importantly will I be able to motivate myself to keep going when I come across problems or will I give up?.

I must admit I had never heard of Folksy until I decided to have a go at selling myself- which is a shame when I see all the gorgeous things for sale on it. Ive already bought a little bar of soap from Stevee Cheese and it is really yummy. I bought the rose scented bar and I was kindly given the apple bar for free. Very reasonably priced too! Folksy will definitely be my first stop from now on when I'm looking for gifts for people.

Cuddles

Ive had a busy few days making lots more cushion cuddles ( I like the sound of cuddles more than creatures!) mainly owls just now, but Ive cut out patterns for smiley heart ones too and will be cracking on with them after writing this.

I think I will do a few mini cushions as well with hand stitched patterns on the front- maybe just 8" x 8" squares. I think when I have around 12 items that I feel work really well as a tight collection then I will put them on Folksy. I have to have a good think about marketing and pricing now too, as well as the ongoing problem of having spectacular photography, grr!

Photos- oh dear!

I started to take some photographs of the things Ive been making today. Maybe around 100 photos of which about 5% are just about acceptable. I need them to be really sharp and very obvious (ie not cluttering them with background mess). Ive never been all that fussy about taking lots of pics so I better get my skills up to date pronto, if I want half a chance of having a decent looking shop. I'm sure I'll get better over time but for opening the shop they really need to be of a high standard.

The other thing I have been thinking about is for the shots that appear in the shop front should I go for arty and eye catching close up or plain and clear product in action??? Ive been looking at other shops for inspiration but not really any further forward. I think in my heart I would prefer more of a close up at first glance, something to attract attention and then in the next picture spaces I have available show the item in action (so to speak- this means if its a collage it might be hanging on a wall rather than some abstract angle). I just don't know, if you have any ideas on this one please share with me.

This photo below shows a cotton zebra print hanging lavender heart with leather wings I've just made. I took this one pretty close up but I'm not sure if the background is too overpowering or creates an element of interest?.

This photo below shows the lavender heart in action (well, sort of Ive hung it from my curtain pole and it probably would be more beneficial near the bed!). I think there is a lot of space created in the picture when shown hanging that I don't think I'm that keen on. I think I'm going to have to sleep on this one- and take lots more photos tomorrow.

PS a certain amount of cropping will be done before going on Folksy.

Mothers day card

Ive been a bit under the weather the last few days with a bad cold but I think its starting to go now. I was cheered up by this gorgeous card my son Max made at the nursery for mothers day, very creative! (well, he did the hand stamping part anyway).

Ive still been busy working away on different things and Im getting together a collection of items to put up for sale on Folksy. Ive been making cushions, door stops and decorative hanging decorations. I want to create a bit of balance between soft and hard and have been making some cards myself and Im also thinking about some framed textile art. Still in keeping with the colours/theme as the soft items.

Heart cushion- a little further

I showed a photo earlier on this month of a heart cushion I had been working on, here it is in the next stages- it has been made into a cushion and is a step closer to the final design. The next stage is for the cushion to be done in machine embroidery so that it is more durable and easier to wash. Here I have used fabric paint and hand stitching for the flower/button detail.

This is the back of the cushion with check cotton fabric in pink and red. The zip slider compliments it nicely I think with a little heart.

Soapy bubble

Just before Christmas I made up my first ever batch of soap- cold process style. You have to leave it for around 4-6 weeks before it is suitable for use because it contains sodium hydroxide (at the end of the process however, there is none of this left in the final soap- saponification). I decided today was the day to take it out and see how it was. I got my recipe and ingredients from the soap kitchen. The picture here shows the soap when it was first turned out of the mould (it was wrapped in a towel at the back of the garage for the last 10 weeks until it was no longer caustic).

To scent and colour my soap I used orange essential oil and ginger. It smells pretty good and gave a nice foamy lather. I have sliced it up into bars ready for use, I do think it looks more like tablet though than soap, not sure it would taste so good.

Here is one of the bars wrapped up in paper and tied with ribbon. I think I will give most of it away to family and friends, it was good fun to make, just like following a recipe, but VERY carefully!

Sunday morning mission

My mission for today is to go out and buy some ribbon locally which I think is going to be a bit of a challenge. Not been living near St Andrews for too long and I know lots of lovely craft gift shops but not shops to buy craft supplies. Could also do with looking for cedar curls or something similar but think that might be pushing the boat out! I normally go through to Edinburgh for my supplies but spending £10 on petrol to get some ribbon seems a bit crazy. I'm sure there will be some amazing craft supply shop just round the corner, its just finding it! I'm sure I could find all I need online but I prefer having a look at things like ribbon in the flesh.

Also will need to do a little tidying today- there is a saying, what is it- a tidy place is a tidy mind or something like that. What this picture says I'm not sure but this is what greeted me this morning.

Jewellery class

Last night was my last time at my evening class for jewellery. I really enjoyed the six weeks, we did everything from bead work to enamel and resin. I found the enamel work the most exciting and enjoyed mixing colours and experimenting on different surfaces.

We mainly worked with copper and I had a go at making some buttons. I was pleased with the results and tried the enamel on some of my own buttons, Ive shown the buttons here (for a jewellery class I really did spend a lot of time making and coating buttons but I felt they would tie in with my own work- I did make a few necklaces!)

If you wanted to try enamel at home it should be fairly easy- my teacher Nicola suggested www.speccrafts.co.uk and it does look a pretty good site they seem to stock loads! It was the cold enamel I worked with and when Ive used up the buttons I made I think I will order a starter kit. You can even paint it on to plastic/polythene (I'm sure I read in the manual) then peel it off so you don't have to have it attached to another surface- wonderful and all new to me!

Cushion Creatures

After completing the owl doorstop I made a few mini cushion owls. These have less detail in the eyes than the first owls I created, I think this makes them look cuter. The body on the first owl was painted by hand with fabric paints, the other two are using some fabrics from the collection I have gathered, they are by moda.

Here we have the cushion creatures I have made (well, they are small versions of what the cushions will look like). I have just started work on the large cushions now.

Getting up to date

Here are the next steps with the owl designs, lots more trials using cotton for bodies and leather or felt for wings, beads and buttons for eyes. Some of the fabrics are plain or printed while others I have painted myself. The large brown and white owl is my first completed doorstop.

Hello, welcome to my blog. I have decided to start a blog to share my designs, creations and inspirations with the world.

Over the last few weeks I have been working on cushion creatures and door stops. I have been looking at owl designs as well as winged hearts and legged sweets. I trained as a textile designer specialising in print and I like to combine a variety of techniques.

Below is the very first owl I made a couple of weeks ago. He is a very rough draft for what I had in mind for this project.
